SMOLESS D1

SMOLESS D1 Review

If you are a dedicated IQOS ILUMA user, you already know the painful reality of the heat-not-burn lifestyle. Yes, the convenience is unmatched. There is no messy ash to clean up, your car doesn’t smell like a stale ashtray, and the nicotine delivery is exceptionally smooth. But the daily financial toll is brutal. Buying a fresh pack of TEREA or SENTIA sticks every single day adds up aggressively, easily rivaling the cost of a traditional smoking habit.

Because of this intense financial strain, the global heat-not-burn community has widely adopted a practice known as “shikemoku.” Simply put, it means smoking the exact same tobacco stick a second time. However, if you try to put a used TEREA stick back into a genuine IQOS device, the result is completely unsmokable. The internal tobacco has already been completely toasted, and reheating the dead center yields a harsh, bitter, and painfully acrid “burnt popcorn” taste.

To solve this, third-party hardware manufacturers began engineering specialized secondary heaters designed to perfectly execute that second smoke by baking the outside of the stick instead. The brand SMOLESS recently made huge waves with their dual-hole “DUO” device, but they have just dropped a brand-new, ultra-budget alternative: the SMOLESS D1.

Priced at an incredibly accessible $20.00 USD (roughly 2,980 JPY), the SMOLESS D1 strips away a few premium features to give users the cheapest possible entry point into the stick-recycling ecosystem. But does sacrificing the high-end tech ruin the flavor? Let’s take a deep dive into the hardware, the actual smoking experience, and whether this budget device is genuinely worth your money.

Aesthetics and Build Quality: The “Ryumon” Design

Typically, when you buy a budget third-party heat-not-burn device, you expect it to look and feel like cheap, mass-produced plastic. The SMOLESS D1 completely defies that expectation right out of the box.

The chassis features a stunning aesthetic finish referred to as a “Ryumon” (flowing pattern) design. It looks remarkably similar to a dark, stylized wood grain or a swirling, marbled epoxy resin. Because of the unique manufacturing process, no two devices are exactly alike; each D1 unit has a slightly unique, randomized surface pattern. It looks exceptionally premium, sleek, and highly discreet.

Physically, the device is wonderfully compact. Weighing in at just 71 grams, it is notably lighter than its older brother, the SMOLESS DUO (which weighed 81 grams), and significantly more portable than carrying around a bulky IQOS ILUMA Prime carrying case. It slips effortlessly into a shirt or jeans pocket without dragging the fabric down.

DUO vs. D1: Where Did the Cost Go?

To understand the D1, you have to understand what it removed to achieve its price point. The original SMOLESS DUO (which retails for about $28.00 USD) featured a very unique top-cap with two separate insertion holes. One hole was specifically calibrated to heat the inside of a fresh stick, while the second hole was calibrated to aggressively bake the outside wrapper of a used stick for the recycled “shikemoku” session.

The new SMOLESS D1 drops the price by nearly $10 USD by eliminating that specialized dual-hole system. The top of the D1 features a single, unified insertion chamber. You use this one central hole for both your fresh sticks and your recycled second-smoke sticks. While this makes the device significantly cheaper to manufacture, it does mean the heating profile is a bit more generalized rather than hyper-focused on flavor preservation.

Interface and Dual Firing Modes

The interface on the D1 is refreshingly straightforward, featuring a clean, bright OLED display and a single tactile operating button. You power the device on by holding the button for five seconds.

The screen displays your current battery level, a live countdown timer for your active smoking session, and your current firing mode. By double-clicking the button, you can toggle between two distinct power settings: Eco Mode and Boost Mode.

Understanding exactly how to juggle these two modes is the absolute key to mastering the SMOLESS D1:

  • The Chain-Smoker Strategy: If you just finished smoking a TEREA stick in your genuine IQOS and you immediately move it to the D1 for a second session, the stick is still physically hot. In this scenario, you should use Eco Mode. The lower device temperature prevents the already-warm stick from scorching.

  • The Delayed Session Strategy: If you save your used sticks in a case and wait an hour before smoking them a second time, the sticks have completely cooled down to room temperature. In this case, you need to use Boost Mode to aggressively reheat the cold tobacco and push out a satisfying throat hit.

One noticeable downgrade on the D1 is the total lack of an auto-heat function. Unlike high-end devices that sense when you insert a stick and automatically begin warming up, the D1 requires you to manually press and hold the button to trigger the 20-second pre-heat cycle. It is a minor inconvenience, but one that reflects the budget-friendly price tag.

Performance: The 4-Minute Session

Once the device vibrates to signal that the pre-heat is complete, you are granted a full 240-second (4-minute) smoking session. The countdown timer on the screen is a fantastic visual aid, letting you know exactly how many drags you have left before the battery cuts the heat.

The actual throat hit on the D1 is a bit of a slow burner. If you fire up a brand-new, unsmoked stick on Eco Mode, the first two or three puffs feel incredibly weak—almost airy. However, as the session progresses past the 150-second mark, the internal temperature compounds, and the kick ramps up significantly. By the very end of the session, the throat hit actually feels substantially stronger and more aggressive than a genuine IQOS device.

When you use the device for its intended primary purpose—a second recycled smoke on Boost Mode—the kick hits much faster. You get a strong, deeply satisfying nicotine rush almost immediately.

However, there is a catch. Because the D1 lacks the dedicated “outer heating” chamber of the more expensive DUO, the flavor quality takes a slight hit. Towards the final 30 seconds of your recycled session, a noticeable bitterness and burnt undertone start to bleed heavily through the vapor.

The Mandatory Accessory: Flavor Boost Filters

Because the D1 struggles slightly with a bitter “zatsumi” (burnt taste) at the very end of a session, there is a highly recommended hardware hack to completely solve the problem.

If you are going to use the SMOLESS D1, you should absolutely pair it with aftermarket Flavor Boost Filters (like the popular IFUMO brand). These are tiny hollow cotton filters that slide directly over the mouthpiece of your TEREA stick. Embedded inside the cotton is a crushable mint capsule.

When you smoke your recycled stick, the extra layer of cotton physically traps the harsh, bitter tar particulates before they hit your tongue. If you pop the mint capsule, the blast of intense cooling menthol completely masks any residual burnt flavors, tricking your palate into thinking you are smoking a brand-new premium menthol stick. Pairing these cheap filters with the D1 elevates the experience from “tolerable” to genuinely delicious.

Pros and Cons

What We Love:

  • The Price: At around $20.00 USD, the return on investment is ridiculously fast. It pays for itself after just a few days of recycling sticks.

  • The Aesthetics: The Ryumon flowing pattern is beautiful, making the device look incredibly premium.

  • Session Length: 240 seconds is a highly satisfying, drawn-out session length that beats out several competitors.

  • OLED Screen: Knowing exactly how much battery and smoking time you have left is a massive quality-of-life feature.

What Could Be Better:

  • No Auto-Heat: Having to manually hold the button to start the session feels a bit dated in 2026.

  • Slow Ramp-Up: The throat hit takes a solid 30 to 45 seconds to really build up to a satisfying level on fresh sticks.

  • Flavor Quality: The bitter undertones on the second smoke are prominent unless you use an aftermarket filter to mask them.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?

If your absolute top priority is getting the cleanest, most authentic flavor out of your second smoke, you should probably skip the D1 and spend the extra cash to buy the SMOLESS DUO. The dual-hole system on the DUO simply manages the heat better for flavor preservation.

However, if you are strictly looking at the bottom line, the SMOLESS D1 is an absolute workhorse. It is a sleek, reliable, $20 tool designed specifically to cut your exorbitant tobacco budget in half. If you pair this device with a cheap crushable mint filter, you completely negate its only real flaw (the bitter aftertaste), resulting in a highly cost-effective, deeply satisfying hit. For the vaper looking to save maximum cash without carrying around a cheap-looking piece of plastic, the D1 earns a permanent spot in your pocket.
